Chair’s Report

I am happy to report that the Cottage is operating with all six beds full, and when a room becomes vacant it is filled quickly.
Terry and her R.N’s are working extremely hard and long hours to see that our Guests are given the very best possible loving care possible.
When one visits the Cottage you cannot help but be “blown away” at the assistance and help given by our Volunteers, who give 110%, and without them Katie Rose Cottage would not exist. We all salute you, thank you.
Last night I attended a Fundraiser at Carrington’s Art Gallery – Noosa Junction. Carrington’s are wonderful supporters of Katie Rose Cottage.
Thank you Julie & Lea.

Ann Rickard was the guest speaker, giving a hilarious talk on her world travels and books.
It was an extremely popular evening, and a big thank you to Donna Webster for her most generous donation of a beautiful Japanese Kimono which was auctioned.

What’s happening at The Cottage

By Co-Founders Terry & Sue

Hello,
Writing this short article is our way of letting you know what is happening at Katie Rose Cottage. The facility cares for 6 terminally ill adults and children in a beautiful cottage surrounded by magnificent gardens.
Each of our guests are very special and the team attempts to deliver holistic palliative care in a home away from home environment.
Katie Rose Cottage since becoming operational has cared for 50 guests, 5 of which have become well enough to return home to enjoy precious time with loved ones.
In total we have given over 700 nights of care to our guests.
The challenge to provide sufficient amount of support workers for our registered nurses will always remain particularly challenging. If you have nursing/ caring experience and would like to join our fantastic volunteers please give me a call and arrange to view our beautiful facility.
The care we provide at Katie Rose Cottage aims to keep our guests as well as possible for as long as possible emotionally and physically. It truly is a happy, peaceful environment.
‘Helping to make every moment matter’ We are here to support you, our community and without you and your support, in all the many and varied ways that you so generously give it, whether it be in terms of your time, your advice or money we simply could not exist.
Thank you to every single one of our precious volunteers that truly are making a difference to terminally ill people.

Regards,
Terry Clarke-Burrows
Katie Rose Cottage
Manager

Fundraising with Bev

What a month it has been for the fundraising and donations. We have had a very successful month so far.
October 2nd the Kureelpa Open Garden was a huge success. We had hoped for $5000 but the day bought in $9500. Our thanks to Val and Ken Smith, for opening their garden, to Pat Atkinson for her team leadership and to the Nambour Garden Club for their huge contribution that they made to the day.

October 11th was the “Mousetrap”. Again this was a great event, a sell out and I have had such positive feedback from some of those who attended the evening. My thanks to the fundraising sub committee… Bev’s Beauties for their tireless efforts. The supper was delicious and so much of it.
October 14th the John Connolly lunch was a lot of fun. What a great speaker John was and if you are into Rugby Union… it was just so interesting. The Cooroy Hotel raised $5000 for Katie Rose Cottage, fantastic effort and we thank them so much for running this event for us.
By the time this newsletter goes to print we would have had the Literary Evening with Ann Rickard, hosted by “thejewellerygallery@Carri ngtons, in Noosa Junction.
Many thanks to all those who have supported the charity by volunteering themselves. We have had volunteers at Eumundi Markets, on the stall and also the parking. We are also going to be assisting the Noosa Triathlon. We get paid for these parking jobs’ isn’t this great. The Noosa Summer Charity Ball is going to be a grand event. All the final preparations are being made at the moment. The Committee has worked very hard to put on what is going to be a great evening. It should be a sell out by the time November 5th comes around. Thanks to all the sponsors, especially Noosa Radiology for not only their large sponsorship but to their staff who are working so hard.

Fashions on Parade

Our shops have become victims of their own success as we have had 6 fashion parades this year.
Each shop has worked hard to select the clothing and accessories for these fashion parades. They have been held in various locations on the Sunshine Coast including Montville, Tewantin, Noosa and the beautiful Maroochy River.
The shop managers and their wonderful volunteers put a lot of effort into these events and this year about $4000 has been raised from the fashion events alone. Then the shops sell the clothing that has been modeled in the parade and this income goes into the shops takings.
Our thanks also goes to the clubs, retirement villages and private hosts for their wonderful contributions and effort that goes in to running one of these fashion parades.

Regards
Bev Barton

Snippets from the Gardeners

Wow! How happy are the Hospice Gardeners – with the generous donations from Yandina Hardware and the Eumundi Markets stallholders of our new wheelbarrow, sprayer, chainsaw and other bits and pieces including money for us to buy other much needed garden tools – unbelievable generosity – all gratefully received – and put to use already!

Our News-

Darryl is progressing well with our sweeping steps through the just planted grevillea grove – its going to look fabulous.
We are drawing up plans for the dam area including groves of trees which can be donated and planted  by our guests’ loved ones as a memorial area.
Currently the waterlillies are looking beautiful and in time the whole area will look stunning. Keep you posted…

The Gardeners Eumundi Markets Gift

Richard Marchant and his partner Lindy have between them 50 years market time. They are the owners of the wonderful Gluten Free shop “Topless Tart” situated in the old railway station complex.
Richard met Alan when Katie Rose Cottage set up a stand near him at the markets. After reading a newsletter that Alan had given him, and reading the gardeners “wish list”, he from 70 stall holders that he knew raising a total of $350 and then through family and friends raised a further $550 to a total of $900 for the gardeners.
He didn’t stop there, he approached Yandina Hardware Store and as a result they donated the wheelbarrow and sprayer, then onto Stihl Nambour who at cost supplied the chainsaw and will service it for the life of the machine free of charge.
It is wonderful and heartfelt when community spirit reaches this far.

Thank you Richard & Lindy

Volunteers Corner

Reminder for the Volunteers Christmas Party on Sunday 27th November, don’t forget to mark it in your diary.

Volunteer Profile

This month we have a new feature, where we will profile a different volunteer each month.
Hitomi or Tomi as she likes to be called is a new volunteer, Tomi volunteers Sunday and Monday nights at the cottage.
Tomi is From Niigata, 31/2 hours north of Tokyo and is here on a working holiday visa and currently
lives at Sunshine Beach, she has been here for 6 months and will return home at the end of January.
When asked why she chose to do volunteer work at the cottage, firstly she said she had a lot of free time and wanted to do some volunteer work and likes helping people.
Tomi would also like to be able, when she returns home to encourage people in Japan to have these hospice facilities available, at the moment nothing is free, everything must be paid for so not everyone can afford such wonderful care.
Tomi works part time in Peregian and in her spare time Tomi likes to surf and go shopping.

Inside the Cottage

Mavis Ratcliffe

During Mavis’ stay at Katie Rose Cottage she celebrated her 38th wedding anniversary with her beloved husband Gordon.
Mavis’ daughters and all 11 grandchildren plus her 13 (nearly 14) great grandchildren were constantly with her, either in person or spirit.
Mavis or Nan as she was known to everyone, got most joy out of babies, as you can see by this photo- especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mavis was an avid lawn bowler and only gave up in recent years due to bad health.
Her tenacity served her well in her 82 years and certainly during her illness.
Mavis died peacefully at Katie Rose Cottage on Wednesday 19th October 2011.

Thanks, Katie Rose

In June, my husband Doug was diagnosed with terminal liver disease, he wanted to stay at home and I wanted him there.
Unfortunately, the last five days of his life I was unable to cope with caring for him and his needs.
It was with great sadness I had to transfer him to the care of Katie Rose Cottage.
The homely atmosphere and the loving care we both received certainly made the end of a short, nightmare journey a little easier.
We all hope we never need such a facility as Katie Rose Cottage, but if we do it is wonderful to have such a facility in our community and I urge everyone to support this facility financially to make sure we keep it.
