Messages of support from friends of the Sunshine Coast Community Hospice, both local and from afar...

ST CHRISTOPHER'S HOSPICE
Dear Terry

St Christopher's is delighted to hear the news that your plan to build the first hospice on the Sunshine Coast, Australia is now underway.

Just over 40 years ago in 1967 Dame Cicely Saunders founded St Christopher's Hospice, the first hospice to link expert pain and symptom control with compassionate care, teaching and clinical research. Much has changed over the last 40 years - what was leading-edge research in the 1960s has now become standard practice. Palliative care is now available in 115 countries, but 78 countries still have no access to palliative care, so there is still a lot of work to be done.

Hospice care is centred on each person's needs; emotional, physical and spiritual. The dying person is not seen or treated in isolation, family and friends also receive support throughout the illness and into bereavement.

St Christopher's vision is of a world in which all dying people and those close to them have access to appropriate care and support, when they need it, wherever they need it and whoever they are. It believes that death must be approached in a way that respects the worth of each individual and that affirms and dignifies life.

We are pleased to hear your exciting news and wish you every success.

Best wishes

Barbara Monroe
Chief Executive
St Christopher's Hospice
