  • A Christmas 'Thank You'

As a newly elected member of the Board, I wish to report how absolutely wonderful it is to eventually see Katie Rose Cottage fully occupied with three guests. To all the volunteers a huge thank you for your tireless work and support of the charity. We now must not relax with our fundraising efforts, as we need every precious dollar we can generate, so that we can continue on with our first class care for the terminally ill in our community.

The dedication of the R.N’s, who are caring for our guests, is nothing short of sensational, and the feedback coming from the families is extremely gratifying. We need to recruit and strengthen our volunteer base for work required at the hospice as well as our outreach services.

On behalf of the Board, I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Staff and Volunteers a Merry Christmas and a Happy & Healthy New Year. The Board is looking forward to meeting everyone on 26th January next year.  Sandra Machin, Chair/President

Wedding at Katie Rose Cottage

Our Katie Rose Cottage played host to a very special event on Saturday 13th November.

Rob Moore, a son of one of our treasured guests Judy, proposed to his girlfriend Wendy Ross whom he had known for many years (the result of Judy having recently given Rob her own engagement ring for safe keeping.)

Without any hesitation Wendy accepted the proposal expressing her desire to have Judy witness their very special day. From that moment on the focal point was for Judy to attend the wedding and witness Rob and Wendy walk down the aisle at Katie Rose Cottage.

It was a beautiful day. Everyone made their way into Maria’s Garden within the grounds of Katie Rose Cottage where the marriage celebrant performed the ceremony.

On behalf of all connected with Katie Rose Cottage, it was a privilege to be able to host the family on their special day and to witness the joining of Rob and Wendy with Judy surrounded by their family and friends.

Many thanks to Maureen McFerran for decorating Maria’s Garden and to all the staff and volunteers at Katie Rose Cottage who helped make this day so beautiful and special.

Christmas Appeal

Our Annual Christmas Appeal has commenced and we are asking the community to consider a donation to our charity in the form of: $10 for Christmas treats for our guests, $20 to enable our outreach service to care for dying people in their homes over Christmas and the New Year; $35 to sponsor a Christmas Angel, one of our dedicated nurses. To donate please visit our website www.sunshinehospice.org.au or by way of the attached form.  We welcome your donations in memory of a loved one which we will record in our special Christmas Remembrance book at Katie Rose Cottage.

Sponsors

WE extend our heartfelt thanks to the continued support from our very generous sponsors:
SHADFORTH CIVIL ENGINEERING CONTRACTORS, NAMBOUR RSL, MOOLOOLABA LIONS AND MULHALL FAMILY TRUST who, along with the coasts many service clubs, businesses and community events, enable the Sunshine Coast Community Hospice to care for our terminally ill at Katie Rose Cottage, free of personal cost.

Fundraising is always a very busy part of the Sunshine Coast Community Hospice.  The Committee is keen to expand itself and we are looking for 2 or 3 people to join us with the view to assisting in the creation of ideas, running events and coming up with ways to raise money for the charity. As we do not attract any government funding, we are totally reliant on fundraising and donations.

Please contact Bev Barton at fundraising@sunshinehospice.org.au who will be very happy to offer further information.  You can view the events calendar on our website: www.sunshinehospice.org.au which has a lot of information on it.  Our next big event is the wrapping of Christmas presents at the Kawana Shopping World which is a lot of fun. Last year we all enjoyed the 13 days and so many who helped last year have come out to help this year as well.

The Charity has been successful in obtaining a grant generously sponsored by the Gambling Community Benefit Fund.  This grant resulted in the purchase of a photocopier, dishwasher and much needed car.  Our thanks go to the GCBF and to Gary Crick Auto Maroochydore who enabled a discounted purchase price and signwriting of the car.

Volunteer Coordinator Report

Firstly, I’d like to thank all the wonderful volunteers, new and old, who have helped out in all areas of SCCH over the past 3 months.

Katie Rose Cottage has been fully operational now due to the extra effort from all the wonderful support workers and volunteers who have helped us during this "settling in” period. Training is ongoing at the Cottage with new workers always needed – if you would like to volunteer in any field please contact me: vc@sunshinehospice.org.au

On behalf of our guests, Yvonne and myself I’d like to once again thank you for helping to make Katie Rose Cottage a reality and wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and a wonderful 2011.    Clytie Glass – Volunteer Coordinator

Mapleton Boutique

Greetings from Katie Rose Boutique at Mapleton, having traded for 7 months and established a strong clientele. It is very gratifying to have customers continually commenting on how attractive the shop looks. Now that the community is aware of what we are fundraising for the donations are coming in on a regular basis. Being situated next to the Information Centre, it attracts tourists who stop to photograph the lilyponds and flow on into the shop. Stock has been sold to tourists from America, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, New Zealand and the U.K. If you are looking for a really nice outfit, jewellery or art work, please come and visit.    Maureen McFerran – Shop Manager

A Volunteer Comment

Volunteering at KRC is inspiring and rewarding. It is an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the terminally ill by ensuring that the last stages of their lives are comfortable and secure. Any person wishing to assist can be sure of a very rewarding experience.

Noosaville Shop

A successful year in getting established at the Bushlands Shopping Centre in Noosaville has seen signage on the front window and a fashion parade at the Tewantin Noosa Bowls Club on Melbourne Cup day help in making the local community aware of our Charity. Along with other areas within SCCH this outlet is also in need of volunteers and in particular a manager who can take charge of the great band of women that man the shop. It is a great way to give back to the community and meet new people.    Liv Thompson - Shop Manager

Dedicated Board Members

It has been noticed that two board members volunteered a night shift at Katie Rose Cottage recently – now that’s dedication for you. What better way to get to know just what our incredible team of volunteers are required to do caring for our terminally-ill guests.

A Christmas ‘Thank you’

Without our volunteers, staff and supporters the Sunshine Coast Community Hospice Ltd would not be able to carry out our vital work; it’s as simple as that. Our kind, loyal team of supporters are an absolute treasure, contributing their experience, time and energy to help others. May we take this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful, joyful Christmas and a very special New Year.
